French at Ashbury
French as a Second Language is a subject studied by the all the students in the Junior School from Grade 4 to Grade 8.
From Grade 4 to Grade 6, students are placed in two different levels based on their proficiency: Core level (C) for beginners and Extended (Ext) for students who come from French Immersion programs, and francophone students.
In Grades 7 and 8, students are placed in three different levels: Core (C), Enriched (En), and Extended levels (Ext). The Enriched level (intermediate level) welcomes students whose proficiency in the target language is more advanced than the students in the Core level. Students may be moved as a result of examination results and a recommendation from their teacher. For proficient students in the French language, there is also a French Social Studies option for Grades 7 and 8 with bilingual teachers in their home forms. There are also bilingual home form teachers in Grades 5 and 6.
At the beginning of each academic year, all Grade 8 students participate in our three-day Quebec City trip. This gives them the opportunity to discover aspects of the francophone culture, link this experience to the school curriculum and make friends.
In Grade 7 all the students go to St-Donat (Quebec) for four days. There, throughout various activities such as skiing, snowshoeing, storytelling (myths and legends), songs and games, they are able to practice and further improve their French language skills.
