Visual Arts at Ashbury
"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up." Pablo Picasso
Visual arts education in Ashbury Junior School embraces the whole child. It offers a safe, non-judgmental environment where students can explore, develop sensory awareness and the ability to think creatively and critically. Students develop coordination, independence and a unique way of knowing and understanding the world in which they inhabit. Junior school art students become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various media through working with a range of materials, processes, techniques and styles.
The visual arts curriculum provides for a wide range of activities, both two-dimensional and three-dimensional, which enables the students to develop their own ideas and sense of personal identity.
Through the study of art and artists, trips to the National Gallery and other local resources, students learn to view art as a reflection of cultural and social conditions.
