Help host the world at Ashbury

Round Square International Conference

September 27–October 3, 2018

Ashbury will welcome 300 students from around the world in 2018 for the Round Square International Conference. We need families to host one two or more of these international delegates for six days, from September 27 to October 3, 2018.

Hosting is an opportunity to share our Canadian experience, foster lifelong friendships, and strengthen international relations. Most of all, it’s fun! To sign up to host a student, please fill in the billeting form or contact billeting@ashbury.ca for more information.

Why host?

Hosting is a rewarding and exciting cultural experience for your child and your family. Through the billeting experience, lifelong connections are established with students from other countries.

How many students to billet?

Our goal is to host 300 students in Ashbury homes. Two students per household is the minimum. Your billets do not need separate rooms; however, separate beds or mattresses are needed. A mattress, pull-out bed, or futon are all fine for the student visitor.

Communication

You will receive contact information for your student delegates and their families, as well as emergency contacts at Ashbury. It is important that you convey house rules and expectations with the students upon arrival.

Meals and transportation

The students will eat breakfast at your home and require transportation to and from school or by shuttle. Lunch and dinner meals for students will be provided by Ashbury. There is a half day scheduled during the conference where you will have some time with your host students. This is your opportunity to get to know your billets and show them our beautiful city and cuisine. You can spend time with your billets in any way you choose. Some examples include a Redblacks game, touring Parliament, a hike in the Gatineau hills, a trip to Park Omega or a tour of Ottawa’s haunted walk. Show off what you love about Ottawa!

Supervision

We would ask that at least one adult is home during hosting nights. If hosts absolutely must go out for the evening after 9 p.m. we ask that you find a responsible adult to stay with the billets until you return.

About Round Square at Ashbury

Ashbury College is one of 180 Round Square schools around the world, and has been an active member since 2007.
Round Square schools share a passion for experiential learning and are characterized by a shared belief in an approach to education based on six pillars known as the IDEALS, drawn from the theories of education philosopher Kurt Hahn. These IDEALS are:

  • I-NTERNATIONALISM
  • D-EMOCRACY
  • E-NVIRONMENTALISM
  • A-DVENTURE
  • L-EADERSHIP
  • S-ERVICE

Each year, students from Round Square Schools come together for a life-changing international educational experience.  In September 2018, Ashbury College will be hosting the 2018 Round Square International Conference. You can share in this wonderful experience by hosting student delegates from any of the 44 participating countries.

Conference Theme

The selected theme for the 2018 RSIC is Bring Your Difference representing the fact that multiculturalism is a fixture of Canadian society.  Canada was the first country in the world to adopt multiculturalism as a national policy in 1971. As a population, Canadians embrace the mosaic of cultures—in essence the differences—that make up our nation. The diversity of this country is a source of strength, and this conference hopes to express these principles through daily themes.
