International Baccalaureate Diploma

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma is a comprehensive, two-year university preparatory curriculum with approximately 500,000 students in 2,000 schools in 124 countries. The program continues to grow at a rate of 14% a year and its excellent preparation for post-secondary study is recognized by universities world-wide. This recognition includes attractive admission packages, scholarships and advanced course placement. Ashbury College has been an IB World School since January 1975, sharing the core values of internationalism and lifelong learning while embracing the IB curriculum as the cornerstone of our academic excellence.

The overall Diploma success rate at Ashbury is typically 100%, compared to the IB World average of 77.7%. The average Ashbury Diploma score has remained high at over 33 points out of 45 compared to the world average of 29.5. The average grade by subject is consistently over five points.

The IB program is accessible to any engaged and motivated student with an average of 75% and higher. Our students may choose the full IB Diploma, the IB Bilingual Diploma or up to four IB certificates, although it is important to understand that it is the full IB Diploma which provides the best preparation for university, as it is a comprehensive program with both depth and breadth.

IB Diploma candidates select from each of six subject groups and complete three additional requirements. Most IB subjects are two-year programs with examinations in May of the Grade 12 year. There are two challenge levels, Higher (HL) and Standard (SL), and students choose three subjects at each level. Those students who take two Language A subjects, typically English A1 and French A2, achieve the IB Bilingual Diploma. A student may also opt to study their mother tongue, if other than English, as a Language A1 SL, enabling our international students to build their oral and writing skills in their own first language while strengthening their proficiency in English. Students may also choose to take IB certificates in individual subjects instead of the full IB Diploma. Any IB course work done at the HL may earn transfer credits at university and is recognized by the federal government as post-secondary study.

Creativity, Action and Service (CAS)

As part of its goal to educate the whole person and foster compassionate, responsible, globally aware citizens, the International Baccalaureate Diploma has the additional feature of a Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) component. This requires that each student be engaged in a personal program of personal growth over two years in creative or artistic projects, sports and community service activities. The activities are evenly balanced over the three areas and students monitor their own progress using an online system called ManageBAC and through meetings and feedback from the CAS Coordinator, Bryan MacKinnon. The requirement is completed in the spring term of the final year through a self reflection and exit interview.
